Muslim Leaders Apply to MA to Remove 26 Verses of the Qur'an

INDIA, ExtraNews – An Indian Muslim figure is flooding with condemnation after petitioning the Supreme Court to remove more than 20 verses in the Quran because it is considered non-genuine.

Menyadur Times Of India, Wednesday (17/3/2021) Wasim Rizvi petitioned the Supreme Court of India to request the removal of 26 verses from the Koran.

“These verses were added to the Qur’an, by the first three caliphs, to aid the expansion of Islam through war,” explained Waseem Rizvi, who is a former chairman of uttar Pradesh’s Shiite Waqf Council.

“After (the Prophet) Muhammad, the first caliph Hazrat Abu Bakr, the second caliph Hazrat Umar and the third, Hazrat Usman released the Qur’an as a book,” he continued.

Rizvi in his petition also said that the 26 verses provoke violence and incite people to jihad.

The petition immediately angered the public and Muslim leaders in India and denounced Rizvi’s actions, which were seen as hurting Muslim sentiment.

The All-India Shiite Personal Law Council and many other Muslim organizations have condemned Rizvi’s actions and called on the MA to reject the petition.

“Muslims will not accept any debate about the authenticity and truth of the Koranic verses,” the council said.

“No one from Hazrat Imam Ali, the first Imam of Shia, to Imam Hussain or any other imam has ever doubted the truth of the Verses of the Koran,” he said.

The Secretary General of the Shiite Personal Law Council and spokesman Maulana Yasoob Abbas said that Rizvi was only spreading discord.

“He quoted out of context and tried to spread discord. The Supreme Court should immediately throw out the petition,” he said.

Secretary General of the All India Muslim Personal Law Council Maulana Mahmood Daryabadi said not a single word in the Koran had been altered over the past 14 centuries.

“The Supreme Court must immediately dismiss the petition. There is no Qur’anic verse that provokes people to commit violence. Wasim Rizvi quoted the verses out of context,” Daryabadi said.

Activist Abbas Kazmi said Wasim Rizvi did so to create a rift between Shiites and Sunnis.

“No Shia has ever said that there is any interpolation in the Koran. We believe this is the book that was revealed,” Kazmi said.

Prince Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, said the petition should be dismissed immediately because it was unclear. “The absurd, reckless, and obnoxious petition deserves to be dismissed from the beginning,” he was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

“There is not a single verse in the entire Qur’an that promotes violence or terrorism, if read in the right context,” he explained.

Prince Ali also explained that “the Qur’an condemns unjustifiable violence and terrorism, while allowing self-defense”.

“Only the distorted recitation of verses out of context can lead to completely false views, as expressed by Waseem Rizvi,” Prince Arcot said.

Prince Arcot said the court was not the right forum or body to decide which verses were allowed or removed from a religious book.

“This would be a serious disruption to people’s religious beliefs that affect their right to religious freedom. If any court accepts such a petition, tomorrow may be faced with a similar petition to remove verses from religious books and the scriptures of other religious communities,” Prince Arcot said. [sc]
