The result meant DPR Korea finished as the group runners-up and will face Indonesia in the quarter-finals, having also secured a spot at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025.
DPR Korea came into the tie top of the group on four points, but they needed three points against a resurgent Oman, who came from behind to beat Islamic Republic of Iran 3-2 in their last match.
DPR Korea also notched a 3-0 victory over Tajikistan in their last match to put themselves in pole position to qualify, and started the clash convincingly.
Ri Kyong Bong was presented with the first sight of Oman’s goal in the sixth minute, but shot wide under pressure.
DPR Korea, however, took the lead four minutes later through captain Kim Yu Jin, who collected a long pass on the left wing, cut inside his marker and sent a scorcher into the top corner.
An Jin Sok was next to have a go, but shot just wide from a tight angle as DPR Korea looked to take advantage of their early dominance.
Ri Ro Gwon came closer in the 36th minute, but saw his 25-yard effort hit the upright on its way out.
GROUP D: OMAN V DPR KOREA
Yu Jin continued to cause the Oman defence problems after the interval, sending a lofted pass to the unmarked Pak Kwang Song who couldn’t take advantage.
Al Walid Talal Al Rashdi sent a wild effort wide just after the hour mark as Oman looked out of ideas to penetrate their opponents.
But a set-piece changed all of it in the 65th minute with Osama Abdul Khaliq Al’ Mamari rifling home a free-kick from 20 yards into the top corner past a despairing Jong Hyon Ju
.
Oman goalkeeper Ahmed Abdullah Al Rawahi had to be sharp to tip away Yu Jin’s effort as DPR Korea set out immediately to regain their advantage.
They did so in the 73rd minute, with Yu Jin once again playing a pivotal part by flicking on a cross for Ri Kang Rim, who chested the ball before slotting into the bottom corner for the win.
Oman, however, snatched a point deep into injury time through Al Walid Al ‘Abdul Salam’s equaliser as DPR Korea dropped to second in the standings. afc/fir
